I am disappointed to report that the campaign to raise funds for a unique life-size statue of Wallace to mark the 100th anniversary of his death this year is still £30,000 away from its target, and there are only a few days left... Unfortunately the fundraising has to stop on the 31st January 2013 to give the sculptor enough time to produce the work for the anniversary on the 7th November.
Happy 190th Birthday Alfred!
It's going to be quite a year, with several radio and TV programmes, about 10 books, museum exhibitions in 6 or 7 countries, five or so conferences, plus many other assorted events. To keep up-to-date with what's happening check the Wallace100 events diary throughout the year on a regular basis.
Hooray! We have reached a milestone with the fundraising for the Wallace statue, in that we have just reached £15,000 - which is enough money to commission a twice-life-size portrait bust of Wallace (if all else fails). Even though there is less than 1.5 months to go before the fundraising campaign has to close, I remain optimistic that we will reach the target of £50,000.
A VERY BIG thank-you to the 40 or so very generous people who have contributed to the statue campaign so far!
Press release: Natural History Museum marks centenary of Alfred Russel Wallace
DATE POSTED: 12 December 2012
The Wallace Memorial Fund's fundraising campaign for a life-size statue of Wallace for the Natural History Museum, London, has only about 2.5 months left to raise the remaining £38,000 it needs! Only about £12,000 has so far been donated by c. 15 generous individuals, so in an attempt to boost donations the Fund has launched a free prize draw with some amazing prizes! Richard Milner, (author of Darwin’s Universe: Evolution from A to Z) is continuing to develop plans for a large Alfred Russel Wallace Centenary Project, to begin in 2013. He would love to hear about Wallace-inspired or influenced scholarly and scientific research projects, papers, and activities from biologists, historians of science, anthropologists, ethologists, prehistorians and archeologists, ethicists, theologians, philosophers, primatologists, and others, which might benefit from funding
A beautiful small hand printed and hand bound book is currently being produced by Tim Preston (email@example.com) to mark next year's Wallace anniversary. Tim's day job is in magazine publishing, and his hobby is also publishing - using a mechanical Albion hand printing press, which dates from the 1870's (see photo below). Once the pages have been printed Tim will glue in all the illustrations and the books will then be professionally hand bound in cloth. Only 100 individually numbered copies will be produced and some have been reserved already.
Dr Tony Whitten the Asia Pacific Regional Director of Fauna & Flora International tells me that there have been a few cancellations on a cruise which he has helped to organise and that there are cabins available for half price to anyone who would like to go on the trip (rather than just to FFI members)!
