Plants and animals named after Wallace

This list is currently very incomplete. To be certain that a species was named after Alfred Russel Wallace and not another person with the same surname it is necessary to check the original species description. If you know of any others please contact me.

Fossil plants

Araucarioxylon wallacei: Fossil wood of this approximately 146 million year old tree was collected by Wallace and Lester F. Ward on a trip to the Isle of Portland, Dorset in 1894. The species was named by Knowlton.

Living plants

Alsophila wallacei (= Cyathea wallacei): This fern was collected by Wallace in Borneo and named after him by Mettenius in 1869.

Acrocomia sclerocarpa var. wallaceana (= Acrocomia aculeata): Studied by Wallace in Brazil and named by Drude in 1881. It was elevated to species and afterwards synonymised.

Fossil animals

Cambroinyoella wallacei: This Cambrian trilobite was named by Lieberman in 2001.

Aquatilavipes wallacei: A fossil Oligocene shorebird from Sumatra, only known from footprints, which was named after Wallace by Zonneveld et al. in 2011.

Conus wallacei (= Lilliconus wallacei) (Wallace's cone shell): A marine snail named by Lorenz & Morrison in 2004.

Achatina wallacei (= Glessula wallacei) (a land snail): Collected by Wallace in Sarawak, Borneo and named after him by Pfeiffer in 1855.

Torresitrachia wallacei (a land snail): An Australian species named after Wallace by Willan, Köhler, Kessner & Braby in 2009. 

Spiders (Araneae)

Friula wallacii (= Friula wallacei): Collected by Wallace in Sarawak, Borneo and named by the Reverend O. Pickard-Cambridge in 1896.

Thrips (Thysanoptera)

Mecynothrips wallacei: Collected by Wallace in Dorey, New Guinea and named after him by Bagnall in 1908.

Lice (Anoplura)

Polyplax wallacei: A species from Sulawesi named by Durden in 1987.

Mayflies (Ephemeroptera)

Platybaetis wallacei: This species from Sulawesi was named after Wallace by Tong & Dudgeon in 1999.

Stick-insects (Phasmida)

Neopromachus wallacei (Wallace's Stick-Insect): Collected by Wallace in Aru and named after him by Westwood in 1859.

Bugs (Hemiptera)

Enithares wallacei: Collected by Wallace in Sulawesi and named after him by Brooks in 1948.

Papilio wallacei (= Graphium wallacei): Collected by Wallace in New Guinea and named by Hewitson in 1858.

Batocera wallacei (Wallace's Longhorn Beetle): Collected by Wallace on the Aru Islands, Indonesia and named by Thomson in 1858.

Calodema wallacei (Wallace's Jewel Beetle): Collected by Wallace in New Guinea named by Deyrolle in 1864.

Chrysochroa wallacei (Resplendent Jewel Beetle): Collected by Wallace in Malaysia and named by Deyrolle in 1864.

Cicindela wallacei (Wallace's tiger beetle): Collected in Sulawesi by Wallace and named after him by Henry Walter Bates in 1874. 

Cyriopalus wallacei (Wallace's Cyriopalus Beetle): Collected by Wallace in Sarawak, Borneo and named after Wallace by Pascoe in 1866.

Omoglymmius wallacei: A beetle from Sulawesi named after Wallace by Bell & Bell in 1988.

Prosopocoilus wallacei (Wallace's Stag Beetle): Collected by Wallace in ? and named by Parry in 1862.

Ants, Bees & Wasps (Hymenoptera)

Augochlora wallacei (= Augochloropsis wallacei): A bee from Brazil named after Wallace by Cockerell in 1900.

Doddifoenus wallacei: A giant parasitic chalcid wasp from Laos and Thailand, which was named after Wallace by Krogmann & Burks in 2009.

Fish

Crenicichla wallacii (Wallace's Cichlid): First found by Wallace in the Rio Negro and drawn by him. Named by Regan in 1905. 

Hydrolycus wallacei: Named by Toledo-Piza, Menezes & Santos in 1999, it is found in the Rio Negro and upper portions of the Rio Orinoco basin.

Tetranematichthys wallacei: Named by Vari & Ferraris in 2006 (see http://si-pddr.si.edu/jspui/bitstream/10088/903/1/VariFerrarisTetranem.pdf). This species occurs in the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Wallace illustrated a specimen from the Rio Negro or Rio Uaupés basins in his unpublished pencil drawings of fish, now in the Natural History Museum, London.

Epipedobates darwinwallacei (Darwin Wallace Poison-Frog): This species from Ecuador was named in honor of both Darwin and Wallace by Cisneros-Heredia & Yánez-Muñoz in 2010.

Birds

Aegotheles wallacii (Wallace's Owlet-Nightjar): Collected by Wallace on ? and named by Gray in 1859.

Eulipoa wallacei (Moluccan Megapode): Collected by Wallace in Indonesia and named by Gray in 1860. It is found on a number of Indonesian islands. This species is classified as vulnerable.

Ptilinopus wallacii (Wallace's Fruit-Dove): Collected by Wallace in the Aru Islands, Indonesia and named by Gray in 1858. Found in Indonesia.

Semioptera wallacei (Wallace's Standard-Wing Bird of Paradise): Collected by Wallace on Bacan Island, Indonesia and named by Gray in 1859.

Sipodotus wallacii (Wallace's Fairywren): Collected by Wallace on Misoöl Island, Indonesia and named by Gray in 1862.

Mammals

Myoictis wallaceii (= Myoictis wallacei) (Wallace's dasyure): Collected by Wallace in the Aru Islands and named by Gray in 1858.

Pteropus wallacei (= Styloctenium wallacei) (Wallace's stripe-faced fruit bat): Collected by Wallace on Sulawesi and named by Gray in 1866.
